2nd International R. Šmēlings Conference – Riga housing environment: the new horizons of architecture

The Second International R. Šmēlings Conference organized by Riga municipal agency Riga City Architect’s Office will happen on Oct 30th in Riga bringing together researchers and professionals from six different countries. The scientific readings under the common title “Riga housing environment: the new horizons of architecture” this year will be dedicated to the Riga housing environment and explore also examples from a global context. The topic is considered to be important for both – architecture and construction professionals, related industries and anyone who cares about the development and issues of the housing sector. The readings will offer new perspective on the challenges of the dwelling and touch the topic in four parts – contemporary urban planning in Latvia, politics of architecture and housing, communities and their realities and conditions, conceptual questions of the housing design. With this conference organizers aims to search for the ways to effectively and efficiently manage and rehabilitate multi-family housing, buildings and neighborhoods.

Participant list of the conference includes the German architect Mathias Madaus, Chilean educator Jorge Lobos, urban geographer Tauri Tuvikene from Estonia and other local lecturers. Professor of Technical University Delft Taeke M. de Jong will hold the masterclass “Urban design quality, a function of variety” for architecture and urban planning professionals and students. RISEBA University Faculty of Architecture and Design III year student Aļona Purvlīce will present the project on transformation of typical soviet microrayon residential building of serie No. 602. The research is an outcome of the International ERASMUS IP (intensive programm) project “Sustainable refurbishment of residential buildings and the management after completion. Sustainable public information” with the participation of the six European universities that took place last year.
